Kathe Kollwitz (German, 1867-1945) bicolor lithograph in dark and light brown ink and scratch technique on ivory wove imitation Japan paper, titled "Bewaffnung in einem Gewolbe (Arming in a Vault)." Depicts a throng of armed peasants ascending a spiral staircase in advance of a revolt, including a woman whose face is left partially uncolored, emphasizing her emotional expression. Plate four from the cycle Bauernkrieg (Peasants' War), rejected version. From the Richter Edition, 1918. Signed "Kathe Kollwitz" in pencil, lower right, and signed and dated "Kollwitz 02" in the stone, lower left. Numbered in pencil 32/50, lower left, by publisher. With old inventory number and German inscription in pencil to lower edge of sheet, illegible inscription to lower right corner, numbering to both left-hand corners, and additional numbering en verso. With Pasquale Iannetti, Inc. Art Galleries, San Francisco, label on back of frame. Housed and matted under glass in a wooden frame with cream canvas mat and red-and-gilt reveal. Sheet: 20 1/2" H x 15 3/8" W. Image: 14 6/16" H x 9 1/8" W. Frame: 27 1/8" H x 21 1/8" W. Ref.: Knesebeck 65.Cb/Klipstein 59.b. Note: A copy of Werner Timm's book, KATHE KOLLWITZ, translated by Lisbeth Gombrich, Berlin, 1980 is available to the winning bidder. This print is discussed on page 7. Publication note: Emil Richter began publishing Kollwitz's work, including rejected compositions like this one, in 1918. In the final version (published 1906) the diagonal composition is mirror-inverted.

Condition

Excellent condition. Sheet is hinge-mounted to backing with archival tape.
