Large oil on canvas painting titled "Artillery Scouts", attributed to Paul Dominique Philippoteaux (1846 - 1923, lived/active Louisiana, Pennsylvania, France) depicting a group of Union Civil War artillery scouts on horseback with a green artillery wagon and split rail fence foreground, surveying an expansive grassy field with large boulders in the background. Godel & Co. Fine Art New York, NY Gallery label verso. Housed in a gilt wood stepped cove frame with repeating patterns. Unsigned. 3rd quarter of 19th century. Sight: 32" H x 59" W. Framed: 45" H x 71 1/4" W.

Note: Paul Dominique Philippoteaux was born in France, the son of esteemed historical painter Felix Philippoteaux. Paul Philippoteaux studied in his father's studio and at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts before moving to the United States where for a time he lived in New Orleans. He is best known for a cyclorama illustrating the Battle of Gettysburg, a diorama of the life of Ulysses S. Grant. and a panorama of Niagara Falls.

Condition

Painting in overall very good condition. Frame with minor scattered losses and wear.
